Smelly Sandals

To keep my hiking sandals from smelling like a dead fish (smelly feet is caused by a mixture of sweat and bacteria), I have to give them some extra attention. I always apply therapeutic grade essential oils to my feet before wearing them, and periodically do the following:

1. Sprinkle sandals with baking soda and let sit overnight.

2. Remove the baking soda in the morning by shaking sandals over a garbage bag.

3. Place sandals in a large bowl or bucket and cover with hot water. Add 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar or plain white vinegar and mix solution.

4. Let soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour and then rinse with water.

5. Set the sandals in the sun to air dry. Repeat the process until the odor is gone.

My favorite essential oil to use for feet odor is Thieves by Young Living. It is an amazing blend that was created after the French thieves who would rob the dead during the bubonic plague. They never became sick because they covered themselves with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics. Essential oils  help to eliminate foot odor because they have antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.
