Natural Flea Shampoo For Dogs

We have a very small and sensitive Chihuahua named Lucy Lu. In the past, I have tried a small dose of the chemical flea treatment and every time, she has gotten sick and lethargic. So now, I make my own natural flea shampoo with two of the most versatile therapeutic grade essential oils, lavender and peppermint. Lavender is relaxing while peppermint is cool and invigorating. This blend works well on Lucy at repelling fleas in addition to lemon oil. Some other essential oils that have natural flea fighting properties are cedar, citronella, citrus, eucalyptus, lemongrass or rosemary. You can use one essential oil or blend them in your flea shampoo. Always perform an allergy check on a small patch before introducing a new essential oil. Dogs, like us can have a sensitivity to almost anything. I make a fresh batch every time that I wash Lucy, which is about twice a month.

Natural Flea Shampoo

Fill a mason jar with the following ingredients:
1 Tablespoon Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap (contains peppermint essential oil)
3 drops lavender essential oil
3 drops lemon essential oil or squeeze half a lemon in the jar
Fill the rest of the mason jar with water and place a lid on top.
Shake well before using. Wet your dog thoroughly, apply shampoo and massage over the entire body. Allow the flea shampoo to stand for three minutes. Rinse well. Repeat if necessary.
Double the recipe for a large dog or use your intuition and experiment with the ingredients.

To deter fleas, I also do the following:
Wash Lucy's bedding frequently
Place a few drops of cedar essential oil under her bedding
Place an amethyst crystal in her water bowl
